Brian Kuemin finds himself really busy these days. His job is killing pests, and top of his list right now are mosquitoes.

“There's just too many mosquitoes right now,” Kuemin said.

Jeff Spencer with Griffin Pest Solutions said mosquitoes hide under leaves and in shaded areas during the day.

"They are protected from raindrops if it starts to rain when they're on the underside of the leaves,” Spencer said. "Waiting for dusk to come so that they can come out and start looking for a blood meal."

According to his crews at Griffin Pest Solutions, the mosquitoes have been out in much larger numbers this year.

"I personally have seen it. I mean we go out on our back deck, and you're not out there very long before there's mosquitoes all over you,” Spencer said.

It’s a concern for Beth Clawson with Michigan State University Extension. She said people are risking a lot if they don't take mosquitoes seriously because they sometimes carry fatal diseases, like malaria and West Nile virus.

"It's really important that we, you know, at least protect ourselves, and at the same time reduce places where they can live and breed,” Clawson said.

Standing water around your home will almost guarantee a mosquito problem.

"Even something as small as the cap to a 20-ounce bottle of pop can support mosquito larvae,” Kuemin said.

The United States Environmental Protection Agency said using the right insect repellent and other preventive actions can discourage mosquitoes and other biting insects from landing on you. Here are tips for other preventive actions you can take against mosquitoes:

  • Remove mosquito habitats
  • Use appropriate pesticides
  • Use structural barriers
  • Avoid getting bitten
