Back to the Bricks kicks off this weekend with its preview tour across the state.

“The Mackinac Bridge is probably one of the most well-known Michigan landmarks there are. You know, and it’s a real honor to get to drive the car across the bridge and have it all on posters with the bridge in the background. I’m happy about it,” said Al Rogers, classic car owner.

Rogers will be behind the wheel of his ’57 Buick Century for the 200-mile trip.

The tour stops in six locations from Mt. Pleasant all the way up to St. Ignace.

Rogers is not alone. A record of 300 other vehicles will be riding along with him to show off their hot rods and classic cars.

His Century is the lead vehicle on the promo tour for Back to the Bricks. It was chosen because it was one of the first vehicles to ever travel across the Mighty Mac.

With its origins in the Buick City, you can be sure Rogers isn’t the only Buick fan in Flint.

“I’ve always been a Buick man. My dad worked at Buick and I worked there for a short time. So I like Buicks,” said Norman McLeod, Flint Township resident.

McLeod and his wife Cheryl have been married for more than 40 years. After a long hunt for their ’67 Buick GS, this will be the farthest they have taken it on the road. They say the promo tour, especially in their car, reminds them of the good ‘ol days.

“We met when I was 16 and he was 19. And he had a ’70 Buick GS. So a Buick GS is kind of special to me,” Cheryl said.

Rogers feels the same way because his Buick was passed down from his dad. With more than 85 percent of the vehicle still original, Rogers said he feels like his dad is coming along for the ride.

“I love this stuff. I’ve been doing it all my life and I’ll never quit,” he said.

The promo tour’s first stop is in Mt. Pleasant on Friday, June 8.
