Bridgeport Charter Township governmental offices to close at landfill location

Posted: Updated:

The Bridgeport Charter Township Governmental Center will be permanently closed due to future unknowns and estimated costs to save the building.

The offices were closed indefinitely in April after methane gas was found around the outside of the building. Officials said the offices were built on a former landfill.

At a regular township board meeting on June 5, the township manager shared the estimated costs that would be required to correct the problems.

The lowest estimated cost is $608,000.

The costs would pay for sealing the current floor cracks, under slab venting, methane gas detection system, trend around building and installation of an exterior ventilation system, and structural stabilization on the west side of the building.

The cost only includes the first five years of monitoring the system, though.

“Because the building would still be on a landfill, there is no way to guarantee the ongoing stability of the building,” according to a press release from the township.

That means the building would need structural repairs every 5 to 10 years. Those repairs are estimated to costs in the range of $100,000 to $200,000.

An alternative would be to stabilize the entire building by underpinning all remaining walls and foundations at an estimated cost of $1 million to $1.5 million. However, officials said the settlement of the slabs would likely continue, but at a lesser rate.

“Based on the cost and future unknowns, the Governmental center will be permanently closed and utilities disconnected,” according to the press release.

The township said crews will continue to temporarily relocate the offices to the vacant United Pentecostal Church on Dixie Highway.
