Scrap tire drive to help combat disease-carrying mosquitoes

SAGINAW COUNTY, MI (WNEM) -

A program to help prevent the breeding of disease-carrying mosquitoes will take place in Saginaw County. 

The Saginaw County Mosquito Abatement Commission announced they will be conducting their first household scrap tire drive of the summer during the week of June 18 – 22.

Scrap tires are ideal mosquito breeding habitat for both nuisance and disease-carrying mosquitoes.

The drive will take place from 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at the following locations:

  • Monday, June 18 – TA Truck Stop, 6364 Dixie Hwy, Bridgeport
  • Tuesday, June 19 – St. Charles Township Hall, 1003 N. Saginaw Street, St. Charles
  • Wednesday, June 20 – Albee Township Community Center, 10645 East Rd. (M-13), Albee Township
  • Thursday, June 21 – James Township Hall, 6060 Swan Creek Road, James Township
  • Friday, June 22 – Frankenmuth Township Hall, 210 W. Genesee, Frankenmuth

The program is open to all Saginaw County property owners at no cost. All tire drop-offs must meet the following criteria:

  • Saginaw County residents only (Must have a valid Michigan I.D. or  Driver’s License)
  • Tires are limited to household tires, car, pickup truck, motorcycle, bike, and other small tires.
  • Tires must be off the rim.
  • Residents limited to 10 tires per address, per year.
  • Oversized tires are NOT accepted (semi, tractor, or heavy equipment).
  • SCMAC does NOT accept tires from businesses or other revenue generating enterprises such as agriculture and contracting operations.

The scrap tire program annually results in thousands of tires being collected from Saginaw County property owners and communities.

All collected tires are transported to First Class Tire Shredders Inc. in Clio where they are shredded and used in various capacities.
