Fenton police and Michigan State Police responded to a domestic situation on Tuesday, where police found the suspect dead from an apparent suicide.

It happened at a home near the corner of Hickory Street and Adelaide in Fenton.

Police said the incident stemmed from a domestic situation between the suspect and his girlfriend on Monday night.

The woman called to report the domestic assault about 8 a.m. on Tuesday. She later went to the police station where officers noticed the abrasions on her neck and learned she had been strangled, Fenton Police Chief Jason Slater said.

Police obtained a search warrant and a felony warrant for assault to do great bodily harm less than murder, along with a misdemeanor warrant for domestic violence.

Slater and other officers went to the suspect's house to try to make contact with the 35-year-old man.

There was no response from the suspect, but police heard a single gunshot, Slater said.

Officers set up a perimeter and called in the Michigan State Police Emergency Services Team.

Police continued to try to get a response from the suspect, but could not. MSP then breached some windows and sent in a robotic camera unit.

The man was found dead in the basement about 12:45 p.m. He had a single gunshot wound, Slater said.

Police have not released his name.

The couple had two children together, Slater said.
