FLINT, MI (WNEM) -

More people have been charged in connection with a Mid-Michigan group accused of impersonating police officers and taking the law into their own hands.

Investigators say the group has been fooling residents and even first responders for years, often acting as police at crime scenes and neighborhood parks.

The fake police ring has been operating in the Flint area for nearly two years.

On Tuesday, June 12, more evidence, suspects and victims were announced.

Genesee County Prosecutor David Leyton played part of a 911 call made last fall by one of the victims who had been detained by fake cops in Flint.

“I’ve been here for an hour and there is no marked car. So I would like an officer with a marked car present,” the victim said on the 911 call.

Investigators said the call is just some of the evidence against a group of impostor police officers patrolling the county without any credentials.

Leyton said a woman called 911 after being arrested by the fake cops in a stop last fall.

“They said they were police officers and when the real police showed up they said they were not police officers,” Leyton said.

Three people have already been charged in the case. On Tuesday, Leyton announced two more people were facing charges.

Willie Strong and Austin Erwin are facing multiple felony charges including unlawful imprisonment and impersonating a peace officer.

Leyton said they started investigating when real officers started connecting the dots.

“Like any other case it had to be investigated,” Leyton said.

On Tuesday, prosecutors showed off more evidence in the case including guns, phony police lights and badges.

Leyton said there could be more victims and is urging anyone who may have been a victim to come forward. He also warns what you should do if you suspect the cop is not real.

“Call 911 yourself. Right when you are stopped. 911 can confirm if these are real police or not,” Leyton said.

Leyton also said the three people initially charged in the ring are now facing additional counts as more people come forward. Those charges include unlawful imprisonment and assault with a deadly weapon.
