A local organization hopes a powerful message in parenting will leave a more permanent mark on Mid-Michigan.

“We are very proud to be a part of sharing this important message,” said Suzanne Greenberg, president and CEO of the Child Abuse and Neglect Council.

The CAN Council was one of the many organizations taking part in the “Chalk it Up to Investing in Families” event in Saginaw on Tuesday.

The event was put on by the Saginaw County Great Start Collaborative. Participants wrote messages on Saginaw sidewalks encouraging parents to spend quality time with their children.

“Just a reminder of what’s really important because it’s easy to get caught up in things and certainly be frazzled as a parent with all that’s going on,” Greenberg said.

Residents said they liked the artwork and the meaning behind it.

“I think it is awesome. We really need to support our children and parents often need to be reminded. Especially, if you’re having a bad day. But to come through here put a smile on my face,” one resident said.

Greenberg said any extra time a parent spends with their kid will make a big difference.

“What they remember is the feeling of being accepted and loved and attached to someone that really cared about them. And we know now in research those are the things that help make a happy, successful and healthy child,” Greenberg said.
