One woman said she was turned away when she tried to take several cats to the Saginaw Animal Care Center.

Now it’s raising new concerns about how to properly surrender animals.

It comes after several cases of alleged animal abuse in Mid-Michigan where kittens were thrown out of moving vehicles like trash.

“What do my tax dollars pay for,” Courtney Pease asked.

The Saginaw County resident said she tried to drop off stray cats at the Saginaw County Animal Care Center, but was turned away.

“I was really upset because I feel you know, they should take them and try to find them homes,” Pease said.

She claims a staff member told her there was no room for the feral cats.

TV5 has learned there are openings right now.

“Today we have 10 open cages. So we do have room, but it changes every day,” said Lisa Stoffel, director of the animal care center.

Stoffel said space for stray cats is always very fluid.

“We started a managed intake where people can come in and say, ‘look, I need to place my cats.’ They’re placed on a waitlist and then as soon as that cage opens up we call them,” Stoffel said.

Stoffel said the issue with feral cats is widespread throughout Saginaw County. She said the best way to solve the problem is through their program called trap, neuter and release.

“They’re not increasing in size and eventually that colony will dwindle out as they get older,” Stoffel said.

Pease said feral cats continue to be a big problem in her neighborhood. She wants to see more done to solve the issue now.

“Maybe they should get a bigger shelter in Saginaw because there is a lot of strays,” Pease said.

Anyone in Saginaw County dealing with feral cats can call 989-797-4500, ext. 4611.
