MIDLAND, MI (WNEM) -

Older adults are heading back to driver’s education.

The AARP driving program is giving Mid-Michigan drivers the chance to stay safe on the roads and save some serious cash on their auto insurance.

“Oh yeah, a 5 percent discount. Ya can’t beat it,” said Kerry Skarbeck, an AARP member.

Skarbeck is like most people when it comes to saving money. He is all for it, but he also wants to stay safe on the road.

Skarbeck spent Tuesday completing the AARP Smart Driver Course.

The course is available to AARP members and non-members. It takes an in-depth look at the effects of aging while still driving.

Participants earn a certification by completing the course and drivers 50 and older who make the cut then become eligible for auto insurance discounts, depending on their provider.

“It’s good the knowledge that’s there. Ya know, as far as picking up on it every three years. If there’s a change in the law and everything and to just listen to other people’s situations. Ya know, it gives you a better understanding,” Skarbeck said.

The course was held at the Greater Midland Active Adult Center, where Amanda Ewald is the program coordinator.

Ewald said it’s important for “seniors” to stay active mentally and physically.

“Our seniors are younger now, like you don’t necessarily want to be considered a senior,” Ewald said.

She said that is why there’s a new focus on activities rather than age.

“A 50-year-old may not feel comfortable coming to our 50-plus center. But this is really for our active adults. So anywhere from 50 and older you’re welcome to join us,” Ewald said.
