MIDLAND COUNTY, MI (WNEM) -

One of two dogs severely injured and found in Midland County has passed away.

The dogs were discovered brought to the Humane Society of Midland County.

The humane society is calling the injuries some of the worst they’ve ever seen.

“She’s got wounds to the face. She’s got wounds to the abdomen. She’s got wounds to the rear legs. Could she be a victim of bait? Absolutely. We don’t know,” said Sarah Gushow, a certified veterinary technician at the M-20 Animal Hospital.

She said it’s not clear if the injuries to the dog named Darling are a result of a dog fighting ring, but TV5 did learn the dog passed away on June 15.

Darling was found with another dog named Denise. They were found along the side of the road by a woman driving in Midland County.

The woman said she was at the intersection of Poseyville and Gordonville Road when she found the animals about 6:30 p.m. She said no one else was around.

As for Denise, her prognosis is much better than her canine companion.

“We got her in time and she was able to get on antibiotics and is doing well,” said Beth Wellman, shelter director for the Humane Society of Midland County.

Wellman said Denise has come a long way from Sunday night.

“Came in bleeding and covered in bite wounds. Her face, her legs, her torso,” Wellman said.

Midland County Animal Control is investigating the incident. So far, the chain of events that brought the wounded dogs to the side of a country road is a mystery.

“We just don’t understand why someone or something would do this,” Gushow said.

If you have any information as to what happened to the dogs or who their owner might be, please call the Humane Society of Midland County at 989-835-1877.
