MIDLAND COUNTY, MI (WNEM) -

A Mid-Michigan humane society is looking for the owners of a stray dog that may have been poisoned.

The Humane Society of Midland County said the 12- to 14-year-old female Brittany spaniel was found Tuesday on Waldo Road near Monroe.

The shelter said the dog, who they called Jeri, was “struggling immensely” and taken to M-20 Animal Hospital.

"She was in pretty rough shape, but we did what we could to try and get her stabilized," said Dr. Tessa Peterson, with the animal hospital.

They ran several tests on Jeri and placed her on IV fluids and antibiotics. Yet her condition continued to deteriorate.

"She was not responding to treatment and she was suffering. So we had to make the unfortunate decision to do what's best for her so that she didn't continue to suffer," Peterson said.

“The veterinarians there suspected possible poisoning, but we are not exactly sure why she was in multiple organ failure for certain. She was suffering and in pain therefore the veterinarian recommended we allow her to cross the rainbow bridge,” the humane society wrote on Facebook.

The dog didn't have a name tag or microchip so they have no idea who her owners are or what he may have ingested.

Now, the shelter is hoping to find Jeri’s owner and provide them with closure.

“Please help us find them and if anyone out there ever suspects someone of poisoning animals please notify Midland animal control immediately,” the humane society said.
