LAPEER COUNTY, MI (WNEM) -

One man was killed after a vehicle left the road, hit a tree, and erupted in flames.

Lapeer County Sheriff’s Deputies were called to Flint River Road, south of McKeen Lake Road in Lapeer County’s Oregon Township, at around 5:51 p.m. on June 13.

When crews arrived, the vehicle was engulfed in flames and crews had to put the fire out before getting the driver out.

He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Investigators believe the 19-year-old Lapeer man was driving south on Flint River Road when he left the road and hit a tree head-on.

Speeds over 55 mph may have been a contributing factor in the crash, according to investigators, but they are awaiting toxicology results before making a final ruling.

An autopsy has been scheduled to positively determine the victim’s identity.

The road was closed for several hours during the investigation.
