Essexville celebrates its 150 anniversary

ESSEXVILLE, MI (WNEM) -

A big anniversary was held for a Bay County community, Essexville celebrates its sesquicentennial.

Way back in 1867, Ransom Essex platted eight acres of land and soon after that small plot of land became the village of Essexville.

Not many of us can say the town we live in is named after our family, but Ransom Kurzer can.

The founder of Essexville, Ransom P. Essex, is Ransom’s fifth great uncle.

To celebrate their 150th year, the city chose the 10-year-old to be their grand marshal.

“Well they didn’t really believe me when I said I was going to be the grand marshal, but I guess now I have proof from all the pictures and stuff so this is fun,” Ransom said.

To celebrate, Essexville had their day jam-packed with fun. Things like a parade, ice cream in the park, fishing contests, food music, and a car show, just to name a few.

Ransom said even if you’re not from the Essex family, the day is all about everyone from Essexville and he hopes traditions like this continue for years to come.

“Knowing how successful somebody who made this city is a part of my family it’s awesome,” Ransom said.

If you’ve never visited the city, rich with history and the small town feel off of the Saginaw River, Ransom said you’re really missing out.

“It’s a great place, you definitely want to come by but I’m gonna tell you once you do you’re not going to want to leave,” Ransom said.

Earlier Saturday morning, they dedicated a park to Ransom Essex, the founder of Essexville.
