(Meredith) — A Minnesota couple discovered a tragic scene when they came home find to one of their dogs shot to death on their own property.

The incident happened in Dodge Center, Minnesota, which is about 30 minutes west of Rochester.

Steve and Jennifer Collazo own three gentle-spirited mastiff dogs: Luther, Lucy and Mara. The couple told ABC 6 News they live on a fenced-in, three-acre property that their dogs roam around on during the workday. The couple has lived there for 29 years.

Tuesday, June 26 started off like any other normal day for the couple. Jennifer was looking forward to seeing her dogs when she got home from work. But when she arrived at the house, she only saw Lucy and couldn't find Luther or Mara, so she decided to walk around the three-acre property to find them.

Jennifer eventually found Luther, who was hiding, and then she found eight-month-old Mara, who was laying dead near the front of the property in a wooded area. Mara had been shot in the head several times.

"I heard flies and looked down, and that's when I saw Mara," Jennifer told ABC 6 News. "I was in shock. It didn't even look like her."

Jennifer said she believes someone went out of their way to intentionally kill Mara. She immediately called police.

"We do think we know who did it," Jennifer told ABC 6 News. "But what you know and what you can prove are two different things."

The Dodge County Sheriff's Office is investigating the incident. If caught, the suspect could face charges of trespassing, animal cruelty and reckless discharge of a firearm.

"We hope something comes out of it," Steve told ABC 6 News. "Because there's a lot of cruelty to animals, and people don't pay for it."

The Collazos are asking for anyone with information to come forward to help the case. If you have any information, please call the Dodge County Sheriff's Office at 507-635-6200.

"We just want justice for Mara," Jennifer said. "She didn't deserve it."
