MSP: Suspect confronted officers with crossbow, shot in shoulder

An investigation into a domestic disturbance between a mother and her adult son sparked a trooper-involved shooting.

Michigan State Police and two officers from the Alma Department of Public Safety were called to a home in the 600 block of Moyer Avenue in Alma about 8:50 p.m. on Tuesday, July 10.

The mother left the home before officers arrived.

According to MSP, officers tried for an hour to make contact with the son, who was inside the home, before they went inside. Once inside, the officers were confronted by the suspect who was armed with a crossbow.

Two of the three officers fired their weapons, hitting the suspect in the shoulder, according to MSP.

No officers were hurt.

The bullets from that shooting hit at least one nearby house.

"I was really shocked," said Barbara Ramon, homeowner.

She couldn't believe it when she found bullet holes in her house across the street from the incident.

MSP confirm bullets fired by the officers did enter her home.

Ramon is upset. She said the bullets could have hit one of her grandchildren.

The involved MSP trooper and both Alma police officers have been placed on administrative leave during the investigation.

MSP said its policy permits officers to point or discharge a firearm in self-defense or defense of another when he or she reasonably believes there is imminent danger of death or great bodily harm.

"This is the first time I heard about a shooting here in Alma, Michigan for maybe 15 years," one neighbor said.

A woman who lives across the street from where the incident happened said she knows her neighbors and would have never predicted the violence that took place on her street.

"Normally it's a very calm, peaceful neighborhood. I was really shocked," she said.

The suspect faces three counts of felonious assault. He is currently under evaluation at the hospital.

His name is being withheld pending arraignment.
