Crews responded to the scene of a large fire in downtown Corunna on Wednesday.

The fire started about 1:30 p.m. at DJ's Cavalier Bar, located at the corner of Shiawassee Street and Mac Arthur, according to officials at the Shiawassee County Road Commission.

Corunna Caledonia Fire Chief Scott Johnson said the flames were coming out of the second story above the bar.

The building next door to the bar also burned down, Johnson said. That building was unoccupied.

Heavy smoke could be seen in the area, but no injuries were reported.

Firefighters say an air conditioning unit on the second floor caught fire.

The bar was not the only business affected.

"We had to be closed down for about eight hours longer than what we would have," said Bonnie Baker, assistant manager at Save-A-Lot.

She said her store not only lost business, but also produce. They were forced to toss out certain foods due to the outage shutting down their cooling system.

"The fresh meat takes the biggest hit when the temperatures go down. I do know that it was quite an amount this morning. So we'll wait and see what it is tomorrow," Baker said.

Residents were sad at the loss of one of the city's most popular attractions.

"It's been here forever," one resident said.

"It's a landmark. A lot of people go there," another resident said.

Other residents gave credit to the first responders and said they are just glad they got the fire out.

"It was spreading throughout, down the roads here with the dry grass. But thank god they got it out though," one resident said.

Firefighters from multiple departments in Shiawassee County responded to the scene, and M-71 (Shiawassee Street) was closed between Corunna Avenue and State Street while crews battled the blaze.
