SAGINAW, MI (WNEM) -

Homeless shelters are typically packed during the winter with people in need looking for refuge from the elements.

Shelters around Mid-Michigan are just as busy, if not more so, during the warm summer months.

In a video making waves across social media, the City Rescue Mission of Saginaw is asking for the public’s help now more than ever.

“This is one of the busiest months of the year,” said Dan Streeter, CEO of the rescue mission.

He said despite the warmer weather, more and more people are ending up on the street.

“Normally, people think about homelessness they think about cold weather and that’s usually when they donate and get involved. But the reality is that homelessness takes place all throughout the year,” Streeter said.

As a result, the rescue mission is now over capacity with 162 people staying at the Saginaw mission and 70 people at the Bay City facilities.

“A large portion of those who are homeless and experiencing homelessness are moms with kids,” Streeter said.

Like Nicole Bradley for instance.

Her daughter Lola is the one featured in the video. At only 2-months-old she has already had to go through a lot.

“When I did have her, we spent a few weeks in the hospital. She had some issues, but she’s good now,” Bradley said.

Bradley said she couldn’t be more grateful to the City Rescue Mission for taking her and Lola in.

“It’s really helpful and you look at things a little bit different being here,” she said.

Which is why Streeter hopes people will reach out and donate toward families like the Bradleys.

He said despite the need for space, they will continue to help people so long as they are willing.

“If they show up on our doorstep we’re going to help them. And help show them that this community cares,” Streeter said.
