Woman hopes surveillance footage helps catch porch pirate

BAY CITY, MI (WNEM) -

A Mid-Michigan mother is warning people about a thief who was caught on camera stealing a package off her porch.

She is publicizing the recording of the incident to try to catch the perpetrator.

“I feel invaded, like my privacy was invaded. I mean, I was home when it happened,” said Mary Tithof, Bay City resident.

Tithof said she was the victim of a porch pirate in broad daylight.

She had a package stolen right off her front porch last Friday while she took a nap with her 9-month-old daughter.

“They should be ashamed of themselves from stealing from families that work hard. And that they stole from my daughter,” Tithof said.

Tithof filed a police report. While police haven’t made an arrest in the case yet, they are getting help in the form of a surveillance video from Tithof’s neighbor Joe Reiss.

“I was disgusted,” Reiss said.

In the video you can see a dark colored car in the driveway across the street from Reiss’ front porch. A person gets out holding a white bag. Moments later that same person gets back in the car and takes off.

Reiss is hoping the video will help catch the person who did this.

“It would be awesome because that’s why I put it up,” he said.

After the incident, Tithof said she is taking extra precautions to make sure something like this doesn’t happen again.

“From now on we’re having it delivered to a different place,” she said.

Tithof also installed a camera that will record everything on her front porch.

As for the stolen package, she said it is being replaced at no cost. Nevertheless, she hopes the thief will be caught and forced to face the consequences.

“We work so hard for our things and I feel like it’s just inconsiderate and just low of people to do this kind of stuff,” Tithof said.

As a way to combat porch piracy, Amazon recently began expanding a program to deliver packages to its customers' parked cars.
