FRANKENMUTH, MI (WNEM) -

A woman came to the rescue after she witnessed several kittens thrown from a truck in Frankenmuth.

“I was terrified,” said Marielle Wilson.

Wilson explained how a horrific moment turned her morning drive to work upside down.

She said someone in a red truck dumped a bag of kittens out of their window while driving down the road.

“He rolled down his window and shook out the bag and the kittens fell all over the road,” Wilson said.

She said it happened long M-83 between King and Baker in Frankenmuth.

“I was really scared. I had no time to process until it was right next to my car. I looked down and I was like, ‘oh my god! A cat,’” Wilson said.

It wasn’t just one cat, but several. Two were hit by a car and two more ran off.

Wilson said she was able to rescue one of the kittens.

While she found the whole thing disturbing, she said she is glad she was there to help out.

“It ended up instead of being the wrong place at the wrong time, it was the right place at the right time because I was able to get a hold of the community and we all worked together and now this cat has a home,” Wilson said.

She has since named the kitten Lucky. He is being taken care of at Pet Angel Adoption and Rescue in Frankenmuth.

"Unfortunately, abandonment of animals is all too common," said Nancy Engel, president of the rescue.

Engel said summertime in Michigan is what she calls kitten season, a time when more and more cats are breeding.

Lucky is now in a foster home with Terry Monroe.

"She's doing good. She's eating and drinking and using the litter box. And she's pretty friendly so she must've been handled. And I don't know how people can do that when they've been playing with these kittens," Monroe said.

Monroe said she has been fostering for years, but she's even seen an incident just like this before with her own eyes.

"I was going home from here and some guy coming at me, I saw the kitten go out the window, roll under the car, run back toward the ditch and then run back under the car," Monroe said.

Monroe rescued that kitten as well.

It is something Engel said just tugs at your heartstrings.

"We work really hard with people. If we can't take in animals because we're full, we work with them to know alternatives," Engel said.

Engel said Lucky is the third kitten to come in from being dropped out of a vehicle. She said they normally have an uptick in kitten drop-offs, but not necessarily like this.

"If we all work together and find the solutions so that people don't get to that point where they have to throw it out the car, then we're doing better than just being angry and letting off some steam," Engel said.

As for the person responsible, Wilson hopes to see justice.

“It was really wrong and sick and I hope they get caught,” she said.
