Hundreds of students from across the country are fixing up local homes

Hundreds of students are getting a lesson on home improvement and helping thy neighbor.

“I’ve never met nicer people, to be treated so well,” said Dale League, a homeowner is Vassar.

League is beyond thankful and it’s easy to see why.

His home is getting a brand new roof.

“I’m telling ya I just love it, and like I said the people are so good, it’s a wonderful organization,” League said.

The project is a part of Reach Mission Trips, a Christian organization that travels the nation to repair homes and they’ve set up shop in Vassar.

Heather Bledsoe is the director and said they literally moved into Central Elementary School.

“There's groups that are excited about ‘oh our room has a sink in it,’ or like the chalkboards become little shelves where you can put your cell phone or stuff at night,” Bledsow said. “So it actually, you settle in and it feels like home pretty quick.”

With almost 300 campers from across the country, some coming from as far away as Virginia, Bledsoe said they’re able to fix up to 22 different sites throughout Tuscola County.

The impact is felt by both the community and the students.

“When they come to these different communities, they’re learning skills on the site and then we have troubleshooters and people locally who make that these projects get done well,” Blesoe said.

Each work camp is set up for a week and they choose the homes based on three things.

What they can make safer, warmer, and drier.

“It’s a really good experience, you learn a lot about other people and I think it’s fun to learn some new skills too,” said Cailin Hall, a work camper from Illinois.

Hall is a five year veteran with Reach Mission Trips and she said it’s been life-changing.

“I’ve built decks, I’ve painted houses, I’ve sealed roofs with roof cement, I’ve put up siding, so a lot of stuff,” Hall said. “It’s just really fun to learn new stuff, meet new people, and help others, that’s just what keeps bringing me back.”

There are eight Reach mission trips in six states this summer.
