The Burton city clerk was charged with a felony on Monday, June 4.

It's related to actions she took in performance of her duties as a notary public, the Genesee County Prosecutor's Office said.

Teresa Marie Karsney, 51, of Hubbard Lake, was charged with one count of violating Michigan's Notary Public Act involving real property. The charge is a four-year felony.

Karsney allegedly notarized a signature that had been made outside of her presence concerning a transaction involving real property, the prosecutor's office said.

"Her alleged action gives rise to probable cause that this statutory crime was committed," Prosecutor David Leyton said.
