Authorities are investigating after a building collapsed at one of Mid-Michigan's largest companies.

The Midland Fire Department said a building that was being demolished on the campus of Dow Chemical unexpectedly collapsed at about 8:15 a.m. Thursday, May 24.

No one was in the building at the time and there are no injuries, officials said.

A spokesperson for the company said the structure, a former headquarters building, “experienced weakening in the structure as part of the demolition project, resulting in the remaining structure coming down”.

When the six-story building collapsed it created a large cloud of dust, however, the spokesperson said any asbestos contaminants, or potentially hazardous materials, were removed prior to demolition.

The collapse is still under investigation.

Dow said an emergency response team is on site “to ensure a continued focus on safety and management of the job site”.
