Father upset after district changes school bus schedule

A Bay City father is desperate for answers after he said his son’s bus schedule was drastically changed.

“It’s very, very frustrating,” said Jon Fitzpatrick, father.

He believes his job as a parent is being made more difficult thanks to Bay City Public Schools. His son attends Handy Middle School.

The first bell ring at 7:25 a.m., but Fitzpatrick said his son has to wake-up before the crack of dawn to get to school. He said it’s all because the district changed its bus routes two months ago.

“Now he’s got to catch the bus 45 minutes earlier, which means he’s got to get up at 5:45, no later than,” Fitzpatrick said.

He said his son has a hard time sleeping at night and his son’s attendance has suffered since the change.

“I’ve called the assistant principal. I’ve called the principal. I called the director of transportation. And then I called the superintendent’s office. And none of them have been willing to really make something happen,” Fitzpatrick said.

The director of transportation for Bay City Public Schools said the district adjusted routes to make the fleet more efficient. He said there aren’t enough buses and drivers to accommodate everyone’s individual needs.

However, he did promise he would look into the issue. For now, the district is sticking with the current bus schedule.

Fitzpatrick has his fingers crossed something changes soon. He said that half hour really makes a difference in the morning.

“School starts at 7:27 and he’s got to be at the bus stop at 6:15? I mean, what does he do during that time period? Is he on the bus sleeping? It’s just not for a good day,” Fitzpatrick said.
