Firefighters were called to an early morning structure fire at a golf course in Flint.
Crews were sent to the Pierce Park Golf Course, located at 2303 Brookside Drive, early Monday morning, Sept. 21.
Firefighters at the scene said the structure was abandoned.
Crews were forced to let it burn out of safety concerns as the roof slowly collapsed.
While the investigation is ongoing, the Flint Fire Department has requested assistance from the fire marshal.
The fire destroyed a legacy of community memories.
Flint Mayor Sheldon Neeley cherished those memories of a lifetime.
"Emotional feeling for me this morning because so much of life has been spent there at Pierce Park Golf Course. Growing up as a young adolescent golfer, and playing and spending a lot of time there. And also running the golf program for young people," Neeley said.
The mayor said future redevelopment of the property is a possibility but it is too soon for specifics.
"That property brought so much joy to families throughout the greater Flint area. It was very sad to see it up in flames. And so we're saddened by this particular loss, but this is not only a loss to the city of Flint but it was a loss to city of Flint residents as well," Neeley said.
