Five people have been charged with murder in connection with a deadly Flint home invasion.

It happened just after 5 a.m. Tuesday, July 11 at a home in the 100 block of Cumberland Street.

Investigators said the homeowner, 63-year-old Albert Ballard, exchanged gunfire with the suspects. Ballard was shot during the exchange and died from his injuries at the scene, police said.

Investigators said two of the suspects took off in a four-door car. They collided with a red van at the intersection of Court Street and Vernon Avenue.

Police said those suspects, 20-year-old Zicary Carpenter and 17-year-old Tyler Pagel, are now in custody. Carpenter suffered a gunshot wound to his chest and was taken to Hurley Medical Center.

The driver of the red van, a woman, was also hurt in the crash and taken to the hospital, police said. Her condition is unknown.

Officers had the intersection of Court Street and Vernon Avenue taped off while they investigated.

Two other suspects were arrested in connection to the incident, 18-year-old Jordan Alexander and 20-year-old Joshua Eubanks.

Investigators also charged a fifth suspect, 18-year-old Dre Jones, but he remains at large.

The five suspects entered Ballard's residence through the front door and three of them went to the second floor where they confronted Ballard's wife by pistol whipping her and demanding to know where the money was, the Genesee County Prosecutor's Office said.

At the same time, the two other suspects confronted Ballard who was sleeping on the couch, the prosecutor's office said.

Ballard retrieved his pistol and shot one of the suspects running down the stairs. He then ran upstairs to protect his wife where he struggled with one of the suspects and several rounds of gunfire were shot, the prosecutor's office said.

“The facts in this case are everybody’s worst nightmare and something nobody ever wants to face,” Genesee County Prosecutor David Leyton said. “We should be able feel safe and secure in our own homes without fear of having to confront thugs breaking in to rob us and do us harm."

Leyton said anyone with information on the whereabouts of Jones should call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-422-JAIL, MSP Det. Jon Miller at 810-237-6922 or the Flint Police Department at 810-237-6900.

“These five individuals and anyone who may be trying to harbor and aid Dre Shavon Jones while he remains at large will be held accountable for their actions,” Leyton said.

The five suspects have been charged with the following crimes: Felony murder Three counts of Felony firearm First degree home invasion Conspiracy to commit first degree home invasion Assault with intent to rob while armed>>Slideshow: Mid-Michigan mug shots<<
