“Today is my birthday and so I was able to get up and come here and it’s just like really nice people and a great way to start my day,” said Janae Whyte.

Whyte is celebrating more than just her birthday, she’s the 2018 valedictorian at Pinconning High School.

She and other high achievers around the state made it out to TV5’s annual Best and Brightest celebration at Saginaw Valley State University.

Over 100 high schools showed up to show off the best of the class this year.

“There was times where like I didn’t want to do my work, but I was like I have to reach my goal,” said Gabrielle Reszke, salutatorian at Pinconning High School.

Reszke said the journey wasn’t always easy but her parents were there to lend some support.

“Very proud you know, not just of Gabrielle, but all these students ya know they work hard, it’s nice that they get recognized for this and get a chance to show off,” said Steve Reszke.

“They learn that through hard work they can accomplish so much and that it wasn’t just a waste of their time and that good things come from hard work,” said Deborah Reszke.

All of the students say it comes down to hard work and dedication.

Hannah Yusuf said it all feels a bit surreal to have come this far.

“It feels really weird that it’s over, but also kind of relaxing and I’m just really excited for the next step,” Yusuf said.

Yusuf is this year’s valedictorian at Heritage High School in Saginaw and her father said he always knew she could do it.

“Her mom and I have been expecting, we hope, we hope and in the end yes, we are here,” Siaka Yusuf said.

Same goes for Sophie Mehl and her father. Mehl is salutatorian at Heritage this year and said it was a fun day of filming.

“It’s really interesting because when we were all standing in the group together filming the commercial, it was really cool to be able to talk to them about what they’ve accomplished and everything and see what colleges they’re going to,” Mehl said.

“Today is great I think that anytime academics are celebrated and these kids that are such high achievers and are recognized for their accomplishments is a wonderful thing,” said Andy Mehl.

This annual event for TV5 is meant to celebrate the hard work of well-deserving students and their families.
