The Independence Bridge in Bay City is scheduled to reopen in May.
The bridge is scheduled to open to ship traffic on Tuesday, May 1 and vehicle traffic on Thursday, May 3.
The bridge was originally scheduled to reopen at the end of March, but was delayed due to “unforeseen circumstances, the balancing has become more complex."
The contractor is planning to finish installing counterweights on Saturday and the city will perform maintenance and repairs Monday through Wednesday, the city said.
"I think it's great," said Drew Denham, Bay city resident. "I think it will solve a lot of problems with people trying to commute through the city and clear the roadways for everyone that lives here."
The sidewalks will remain closed as they are not yet safe for pedestrian travel, the city said. There is no word on when the sidewalks will reopen.
