A Bay City bridge has finished some of its repairs ahead of schedule.
Rachel Phillips, the city’s Engineering Manager, said Davis Construction finished the repairs necessary to open the Independence Bridge to ship traffic.
The bridge will open on April 29, Sunday at midnight.
The contractor finished installing steel counterweights on Friday, one day earlier than expected.
Officials decided to partially open the bridge early after crews tested the breaks, made sure the bridge open and closed properly, and did some additional balancing on Saturday morning.
Phillips said there is still a lot of work to do on before the bridge is open to vehicle traffic on Thursday, May 3.
