Lapeer High School graduating senior J.P. Wallace stole the show at his graduating ceremony.
Wallace performed a cover of Lukas Graham’s “7 Years” with lyrics he wrote to reflect the past and present life of his graduating classmates at a ceremony at Oakland University.
"I chose the lyrics I did because I really wanted my version to be a story from beginning to now and then to the future, similar to how Lukas Graham did it," said Wallace.
Wallace's adapted lyrics read, “Seniors, look around, we’ve made our parents proud, we’ve worked so hard and now we get our cap and gown" and “Soon we’ll be getting our degrees, we’ll have our own house keys and we’ll be telling high school stories to our families.”
"I've always liked the song and a ton of people suggested I cover it but the song says "once I was 20 years old" and obviously I'm not 20 years old so I wanted to change some of the words and while I was brainstorming this I was having a conversation with my friend all about graduation and how it's going to be bittersweet and everything and it hit me to make the song all about graduating," said Wallace.
The crowd filled with students, family and friends erupted in applause giving Wallace a standing ovation.
Wallace says he's been singing since he was seven years old and playing piano since the age of thirteen. He plans to attend Oakland University in the fall and seek a degree in business while living at home to continue to pursue his passion of music.
