More than 500 bikes given to children in Flint for Summer Bash

It’s every child’s dream, a brand-new bike.

This summer, children from all across Genesee County got to live out that dream for free thanks to Little Miss Flint.

The young activist who captured the hearts of many, even billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk, who offered to donate more than 500 bicycles to the Flint community, in honor of her Summer Bash

“That was a crazy phone call I got at 3 a.m. and then having to pull all this off in three days was ridiculous,” said Galen Miller, a close friend and partner with Little Miss Flint. “But everybody in the community came together.”

Miller is also the executive director of Pack Your Back, a non-profit organization that collects fund and school supplies for Flint’s children, which is why they decided to offer free summer workbooks and reading materials to kids as well.

To keep their minds just as active as their bodies this summer.

“We’re able to obtain books to hand out to students and also launch this reading program,” Miller said. “So it’s not just saying you’re going to do this workbook, it’s come have fun, then do the work later.”

The more than 500 bikes along with the 70 scooters were all given away to kids in the Flint area.

“We’re going to put a wristband on their wrist and if they get a wristband they’re going to be walking out of here with a free bike,” Miller said.

But even more important were the memories created, that just like riding a bike, these kids won’t soon forget.
