It’s always important to remain vigilant behind the wheel, but there are a few areas across Mid-Michigan where you may want to take extra caution.
Newly released data highlights some of the most dangerous and deadly intersections in Saginaw County.
The statistics are based on the number of crashes and the number of fatalities.
The most common place for accidents is at the corner of Bay and Tittabawassee, according to data from Michigan State Police.
“There’s always people moving around out here. And when people are moving around, sometimes they don’t pay attention to each other and crashes occur,” said Lt. Miguel Gomez, with the Saginaw County Sheriff’s Office.
MSP reported nearly 60 crashes at the intersection last year. Eight of those involved injuries.
There were 14 injury crashes at the corner of Center and State Street.
Gomez said in his experience, neither intersection is the most dangerous. He believes it’s a stretch of Gratiot Road.
“Gratiot from Center Road all the way out to Merrill,” he said. “Because of the speed at 55 and how many people are really traveling 55 miles an hour? And the stop sign intersections where people pull out.”
Taylor Lively said she knows firsthand Gratiot is dangerous.
“I was actually two years ago in a car accident right there at the corner,” Lively said.
All of these intersections are dangerous in their own way.
Gomez said to cut back on crashes there are two easy steps – slow down and pay attention.
“If everybody paid attention to what they were doing we wouldn’t have these kind of crashes,” Gomez said.
Other dangerous intersections in Saginaw County include Bay and Shattuck, Birch Run and I-75, and Fashion Square and Tittabawassee.
The Michigan Auto Law created a database where you can search for the most dangerous intersections in your county.
