Authorities have charged the parents of a missing 3-year-old girl with murder, child abuse and other charges.
Genesee County Prosecutor David Leyton announced the charges Tuesday against 27-year-old Erica Finley and Khairy Simon.
Investigators said they were notified by a teacher at Burton Glen Academy about marks on a 5-year-old student's body that looked like abuse. The Department of Health and Human Services followed up with the family the next day. While there they asked the mother, 27-year-old Erika Finley, about her other child, 3-year-old Kimora Simon.
Finley told DHHS the little girl was with her father, Khairy Joshuawon Simon, in Detroit.
Police spoke with several relatives in Detroit who reported they had not seen the child in more than a year. Investigators interviewed the parents of the 3-year-old. Both had conflicting stories, police said.
After their investigation, Leyton said officials believe Kimora was beaten to death by her parents. The girl's father then allegedly buried her near railroad tracks behind Regency Apartments. Police spent three days searching the area with K9 units looking for the body, however, Leyton said they believe the remains were carried away by animals.
Investigators have also retrieved a backpack believed to have been used to transport the child's body.
The girl's parents have been charged with felony murder, child abuse in the first degree, child abuse in front of another child, tampering with evidence and lying to a police officer.
Investigators said two other children, a 7-year-old boy and 5-year-old boy, were also in the home.
They are currently in temporary foster care placement.
