Police have released more information regarding a fatal Tittabawassee Township crash.
Investigators said Marc Bingham, 68, from Merrill, was westbound on Vasold Road on Nov. 3 when he failed to stop for a stop sign at the intersection at Gleaner.
Police said he hit the passenger side of a vehicle northbound on Gleaner that was driven by Matthew Mantei, 42, of Freeland.
Matthew’s 14-year-old daughter, Bailee, was in the passenger’s seat and received fatal injuries.
She was a student at Freeland Schools.
Bingham also died. Investigators now say he was having a heart attack at the time of the incident, and his death has been ruled by natural causes.
Matthew was seriously hurt, but is home recovering.
The Mantei family has issued the following statement:
Bailee Suzanne Mantei was kind, beautiful, big hearted, athletic, with a huge love for soccer, intelligent, and incredibly funny. She took pride in the fact that she was the VP of her Freshman class at Freeland High School. More than anything she made an impact on everyone she came in contact with. She was the light of our family that can never be replaced.
Her father is home and grieving with his family. We thank you all for your prayers and support, and ask that you respect our family’s privacy.
Funeral services for Bailee will be held at St. Agnes Catholic Church.
Visitation will be on Thursday from 12-8 p.m., with a vigil at 6 p.m.
Funeral services will be on Friday at 11 a.m.
A scholarship fund has been set-up in Bailee's name. Her family is asking that in lieu of flowers at the service, people consider contributing to it. Find the fund here.
The accident remains under investigation.
Alcohol is not believed to be a factor in this crash.
