The 2018 Women’s Flat Track Derby Association is in full swing.
The Flint Roller Derby took on their rivals the Ann Arbors Bruising Company.
At the Rollhaven Skating Center, the Flint Roller Derby is in the midst of another winning season.
For years they’ve remained a force to be reckoned with on the rink with winning the Division 1 Championship back in 2017.
“Last year we went 10 and 1 and we lost one game by one point, so yeah, we’re hoping we’ve got two home games and we’re hoping to win big in those,” said Nicholas Cotton, the coach for the team.
Cotton said this year they’re already at 4 and 2, but Saturday’s game, might mean even more than a championship.
For those at the Flint Roller Derby, this is a big moment for them, it’s revenge against their old rivals from Ann Arbor.
“There’s a little bit of a rivalry, you know everybody wants to win,” said Jess Duncan.
Duncan is the teams pivot blocker and said they’ve gone up against a lot of tough opponents, but few compare to the Ann Arbor Bruising Company.
“We haven’t played them in about two years, the last time we played them we took second place at the Mitten Kitten Tournament,” Duncan said.
Now they’re hoping to even the score and get back on top.
But for these players, the comradery between them sometimes means even more than winning.
“It was more than we could’ve hoped for, you know we still hold that very dear,” said Ashley Macdermaid.
“As they get better and better and better, they move up the ranks, and it’s just a way to get better and have a good time,” Cotton said.
In a sport that helps these women both on and off the rink.
