Prosecutor: Grand Rapids police justified in shooting death

Strong winds in Oakland County broke off a large part of a tree, fell on a man and killed him.

Oakland County deputies and the Independent Township Fire Department were sent to the 4700 block of Rattek for a man that was trapped under a large part of a tree that fell on top of him.

When deputies arrived, they said the man died from his injuries.

The Oakland County Sheriff’s Office said that the 36-year-old man from Waterford Township was using gardening equipment to spread mulch when he was working on his employer’s backyard.

While he a working, a large part of a tree broke off and fell on his back.

The impact forced his head his head into the steering levers of the machine and pinned him in.

Deputies said the levers went into the man’s head, contributing to his death.

Investigators from the Independence Substation and the Medical Examiner's Office took over the investigation.

The man’s body was removed from under the tree and turned over to Medical Examiner’s Office.

An autopsy has been scheduled for the following morning.
