Police believe the suspect in an assault that carried out at a Walmart parking lot was soon after involved in a rollover crash.
Officers were sent to Walmart, located at 5825 Brockway Road, for a reported assault at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, June 5.
Saginaw Township Chief Don Pussehl said the suspect approached a man in the parking lot and began choking another man for no apparent reason.
The man did have his daughter with him, but Pussehl said the suspect made no attempt to abduct the daughter.
Bystanders helped the victim escape the suspect’s grasp.
Pussehl said the suspect left the area in a vehicle with a New York license plate.
At about 8 p.m., police received a call about a rollover crash at Weiss Street and Wieneke Road.
Pussehl said the suspect from the reported assault at Walmart crashed into the rear end of a westbound vehicle on Weiss Street, overturning the suspect’s vehicle.
He sustained minor injuries and was taken to the hospital.
The other vehicle involved was waiting for a traffic signal.
No word yet on the condition of the occupants inside that other vehicle.
The scene was cleared shortly before 9 p.m.
Officers believed the suspect was under the influence of some type of substance.
They were able to obtain a search warrant for a sample of the suspect’s blood and sent it to the Michigan State Police Crime Lab for testing.
When tests are completed, detectives will meet with the prosecutor’s office to determine charges.
Pussehl said detectives plan to seek charges on the assault that happened in the Walmart parking lot.
