The 40th Annual Regional Emmy Awards was held at the Motor City Sound Bar auditorium Saturday night in Detroit.

WNEM TV5 News Anchor David Custer and Video Editor Michelle Galarno took home Emmy Awards for their work on the story Focusing on Freedom.

Focusing on Freedom, which aired in May 2017, hones in on inmates who were sentenced to life in prison as juveniles.

A supreme court ruling in 2012 said juvenile offenders deserve a second chance and should be granted a lesser sentence, stating that only in the rarest of cases should a new sentence not be granted.

Custer spent more than a year working on this topic speaking with inmates, public defenders, and local prosecutors about this ruling.

While it was up against three other stories from across the state, the National Academy of Arts and Television recognized Focusing on Freedom as the winner.

Photographer Derrick Smith and Galarno along with Custer were also nominated for their story on Staff Sgt. Travis Mills and his retreat four wounded veterans in Maine.

Custer was also a presenter at this year's ceremony. This is his fifth Emmy win out of ten nominations in his career.
