(Meredith) -- An 8-year-old boy with a huge heart has made it his mission to provide homeless people in his Indiana community with "blessing bags" filled with food, water and other essentials.

Maddox O'Connor said his battle with a rare form of muscular dystrophy inspired him to give back to people who are suffering.

"I know what it's like to live in a world I didn't ask for, and they need love," he told WISH-TV.

About two years ago, the young boy saw a homeless man on the way to his weekly doctor's appointment at Riley Hospital for Children in Indianapolis. He decided to give the man a sandwich. From that point, he made sure to bring an extra lunch with him each week just in case he saw someone else in need.

Months later, he realized more people needed help.

"He was like, 'It's not fair mommy. Everybody needs food. I need to have enough food for everyone,'" said his mother, Shawn O'Connor.

So, the 8-year-old created Maddox's Mission and began collecting donations to make blessing bags filled with non-perishable food items, water, gloves, hats, socks, deodorant, body wash, and other hygiene products.

Each bag also includes a note with a touching affirmation that reads:  "You are loved, and you are important. We love you. You are important to Jesus and Maddox's Mission."

Maddox said, with the help of his community, he plans to hand out 500 bags on Dec. 7 and even more bags next year.

"We're gonna buy more blessing bags for every homeless man for three months every year."
