A new study claims Flint is the second worst place to live in the country, behind Detroit.
“I think the study is a little bit silly because I don’t believe that,” said Deja Logan, Flint resident.
Logan was born and raised in Flint.
The website 24/7 Wall St. said Flint is only slightly better than its close neighbor Detroit, who sits at the top of the list.
Logan has other thoughts.
“I don’t go around feeling scared looking behind my back. I know the city is slowly trying to make a turnaround,” Logan said.
The website said it came to this conclusion based off data on population decline, poverty levels, education, local job market and crime.
While Logan isn’t seeing it, some of her neighbors are nodding their heads in agreement with the study.
“It’s the worst city to live in. We have poverty everywhere. We have killings everywhere. There’s people stabbing people for money, shoes, food. We shouldn’t have to live like this on top of the water crisis,” said Gerry Drake, Flint resident.
Like Logan, Dale Robinson also grew up in Flint’s inner limits and has mixed emotions about Flint’s place on the list.
“I do because I’m from here. I know the bad side. I know the good side. And I expect more good than bad,” Robinson said.
Mayor Karen Weaver is chiming in on the city’s second place rating. She issued the following statement:Most people I meet who have come to Flint for the first time tell me how pleasantly surprised they are to see what a thriving downtown we have, and how impressed they are by our colleges, universities, cultural center and other attractions and developments going on. And the City's crime rate continues to decline. As a matter of fact, the crime stats reported in the study seem to be outdated. As of 2017, Flint was at approximately 1,496 per 100,000, which is not where we want to be ultimately, but it is an improvement from the past.Copyright 2018 WNEM (Meredith Corporation).
