A popular department store in Mid-Michigan will be closing its doors by the end of the summer.

A bankruptcy judge approved the sale Wednesday, April 18 after the store’s parent company, Bon-Ton Stores, failed to find a bidder willing to keep the business going.

"While we are disappointed by this outcome and tried very hard to identify bidders interested in operating the business as a going concern, we are committed to working constructively with the winning bidder to ensure an orderly wind-down of operations that minimizes the impact of this development on our associates, customers, vendors and the communities we serve. We are incredibly grateful to all of our associates for their dedicated service to Bon-Ton and to our millions of loyal customers who we have had the pleasure to serve as their hometown store for more than 160 years," said Bill Tracy, President and Chief Executive Officer.

The bankruptcy means the company’s 256 stores, including 49 Younkers stores, will close by the end of August. Mid-Michigan is home to two of the stores, located on Eastman Avenue in Midland as well as E. Wilder Road in Bangor Township.

According to the bankruptcy filings, Bon-Ton operates in 23 states and employs about 23,000 people.

The following is a statement posted on the company's website: On April 18, 2018, Bon-Ton officially announced Bankruptcy Court approval of the sale of the inventory and substantially all of the Company’s assets. As such, Bon-Ton will conduct an orderly wind-down of its operations and is committed to minimizing the impact of this development on our associates, customers, vendors and the communities we serve.

We expect the liquidation process in all Bon-Ton stores to begin shortly. Throughout the store closing sales, our stores, e-commerce and mobile platforms under the Bon-Ton, Bergner’s, Boston Store, Carson’s, Elder-Beerman, Herberger’s and Younkers nameplates will remain open and serving customers. We will continue to provide more details on our going out of business sales in the near term.

On behalf of all of us, thank you for your support and business.Copyright 2018 WNEM (Meredith Corporation). All rights reserved.
