(Meredith) – Some people can’t go without using their smartphone for a few seconds. Imagine ditching that device for 365 days.
Vitamin Water recently unveiled a new challenge for 2019, offering to give $100,000 to someone who can go without their smartphone for an entire year.
“This means you may not physically operate, caress, hug or otherwise be physically affectionate with anyone’s smartphone,” the company said on its website.
Those interested in the challenge can enter by creating a Twitter or Instagram post “explaining how you would use your year if you took a break from your smartphone.” Contestants will also need to include the hashtags #nophoneforayear and #contest to be considered.
The entry period ends Tuesday, Jan. 8 at 11:59 p.m. ET. Up to four entries are allowed per person.
Vitamin Water will pick a winner on or around Jan. 22. That person will receive a Nokia 3310 (non-smartphone) with a monthly plan to make calls and text.
Though tablets are also prohibited during the challenge, laptops and desktop computers are OK to use.
At the end of the year, the chosen participant will be given a lie detector test to prove they went 365 days without using a smartphone. If the person made it the full year, they'll win the $100,000 grand prize. If they only made it six months without their beloved device, they'll win $10,000.
