High school graduates receive diplomas with the school name misspelled
CHESTERFIELD, Va. (WWBT/Gray News) – Graduates at a high school in Virginia were disappointed to see the name of their school misspelled on their diplomas.
The 2024 graduating class of Matoaca High School in Chesterfield, Virginia, celebrated their academic milestone with family and friends on Monday morning.
After collecting their diplomas, some students and family members were surprised to see the school’s name was printed incorrectly.
All the correct letters were there, but out of order. “Matoaca” was misspelled as “Matacoa.”
In addition, the month listed on the diploma was June, not May.
Images of the errors spread on social media, with many people commenting on the mistake.
“I would be very upset,” Matoaca student Justin Beavers said, though he admitted the word trips him up as well. “I mean, I don’t really know how to spell it a lot either, but the school should know.”
Another student pointed out the effort it will take to fix the error.
“I don’t like how it’s misspelled. I think it’s a little absurd,” Matoaca student Clayton Frankenburger said. “Because they gotta go through all the trouble to fix it and everything, and people just aren’t happy with it, especially the parents.”
A spokesperson for Chesterfield County Public Schools said they are fixing the mistake.
This message from CCPS went out to families after the commencement ceremony on May 20:
“Greetings, Class of 2024, Congratulations on your graduation from Matoaca High School. It was a great day to be a Warrior! Following the ceremony, we were made aware of a misspelling of our school name on some of the diplomas. As such, we have reached out to Jostens to have the error corrected and ordered a new diploma for each of our Matoaca Class of 2024 graduates. A message will be sent once the new diplomas have arrived so ALL Warriors can receive their proper diploma. Enjoy your day, Class of 2024!”
WWBT reached out to Jostens, the company that printed the diplomas, for comment.
