American Red Cross urges blood donations amid shortage
LANSING, Mich. (WILX) - The American Red Cross is urging people to donate blood as scheduled donations have declined in recent weeks, leading to a critical shortage nationwide.
The organization said the period between Memorial Day and Labor Day typically brings an increase in severe traffic crashes, increasing the need for blood donations.
The Red Cross said the nation’s blood supply has dropped by several thousand units in just one week due to a decline in scheduled donations. Officials are concerned the shortage could worsen in the coming days and weeks.
The shortage is especially severe for Type O, Type A-negative and Type B-positive blood.
People interested in donating can schedule an appointment with the American Red Cross.
