Here are five things you need to know for Friday.
- The development of the $23 million La Piazza’ development in downtown Grand Blanc is facing a setback. The developer announced that a deal to purchase land from key partners, the owners of Ziggy’s Ice Cream, fell through when the owners asked for over double what he was willing to pay. The developer is now preparing to scale back the project on a smaller footprint. TV5 has reached out to Ziggy’s for comment. Stay with TV5 on air and online for more updates.
- Flint and the police lieutenants union have reached a tentative agreement on a new labor contract. The city says union membership unanimously approved the agreement, which the city describes as an important step in maintaining public safety while staying fiscally responsible. The contract still needs approval from the city council.
- The RX Kids program is getting rave reviews. During the state policy conference Thursday, program founder and director Dr. Mona Hanna shared study results from The Lancet Public Health journal. They showed the program lowered preterm births in Flint by 18% over two years. The program offers financial support for pregnant mothers and developing families across Michigan.
- You can help save lives today through a Mobile Medical Response blood drive. MMR is hosting two. Everyone who donates will get a $25 e-gift card. The first drive is at 7 a.m. at MMR’s meeting room on South Washington in Saginaw. The second is at 9 a.m. at the MMR building in Caro. Walk-ins are welcome.
- The first ever Saginaw Tattoo Festival kicks off today and runs through Sunday inside the Dow Event Center. Organizers say many of the attending artists have been booking in advance, but walk-up tattoos are available on a first-come, first-served basis. Doors open at 2 p.m. today.
