Frankenmuth Covered Bridge celebrating 45th anniversary
FRANKENMUTH, Mich. (WNEM) - The Bavarian Inn is celebrating the 45th anniversary of its iconic Holz Brücke Covered Bridge.
Construction of the bridge began in 1979 when William “Tiny” Zehnder, a visionary leader for the Bavarian Inn Corporation, saw the need for more parking as Frankenmuth got bigger. He envisioned constructing a bridge that would not only honor Frankenmuth’s German heritage, but showcase old-world craftmanship as well.
The Covered Bridge was built in two years using Douglas fir timber and traditional hand tools and methods by renowned bridge builder Milton Graton. The bridge features an authentic covered design, protecting it from bad weather and paying homage to European tradition. Additionally, its wooden beams are secured with wooden pegs, showcasing a rare craftmanship in our modern world today. The bridge’s construction was complete after twin oxen moved the 230-ton structure into place in January of 1980.

The Covered Bridge is a vital connection point for those visiting downtown Frankenmuth. Visitors and locals are able to drive or walk across the bridge to head to the Bavarian Inn Lodge or access more parking for the River Place, which often serves as the location for the city’s many festivals. It also serves as a popular spot for visitors and locals to admire the bridge, the town, and the river.

To celebrate the Covered Bridge’s rich history and anniversary, the Covered Bridge Shop is hosting a free family-fun event called the Bridge Birthday Bash. There will be live music, food trucks, yard games, a bounce house, and more. Adult attendees will also be able to have cocktails served at the outdoor bar.
The Bridge Birthday Bash will be on Sept. 28 and goes from noon until 6 p.m.
