New security measures in place after car crash at McNamara Terminal
ROMULUS, Mich. (WNEM) – Nearly two weeks after a man drove his car into Detroit Metro Airport, new security measures are now in place.
A man driving a Mercedes sedan hopped the curb, crashed through a door at the McNamara Terminal, and slammed into a Delta ticket counter. The driver was arrested.
The Wayne County Airport Authority said reviews of all safety systems started that night.
“We began to take a look at bollards that we had on location, but we did not think they were heavy enough to stop a particular vehicle, so we did take a look at jersey barriers,” said Tadarial Sturdivant from Wayne County Airport Authority. “Jersey barriers weigh about 9,000 pounds apiece. We have put those barriers up in front of all the doors at both the McNamara and the Evans departure and arrival levels.”
Six people were treated for injuries. The door that was impacted is still boarded up, and the ticket counter is blocked off.
The driver is undergoing a medical evaluation. Once that is complete, police will present their findings to the prosecutor’s officer to determine if any charges should be filed.
Investigators believe there are no signs of terrorism.
