LANSING, Mich. (WNEM) — The Michigan Department of State announced that changes are coming to the automatic voter registration process starting June 1.

Eligible residents who complete a qualifying transaction at a Secretary of State office will continue to be automatically registered or preregistered to vote at the time of the transaction.

MDOS will mail every newly registered voter a confirmation of their registration, an envelope with prepaid postage, and a pre-addressed form that the registered voter can return if they want to opt out of voting. MDOS will remove their registration from the Qualified Voter File and notify the local clerk.

Information about automatic registration and preregistration is posted each month by the Bureau of Elections and can be found here.

Voters are still able to send a written request to their local clerk if they would like to cancel their registration.
