FLINT, Mich. (WNEM) - As the Flint community marks 10 years of the Flint Water Crisis, the National Clean Water Collective is continuing an initiative to address water quality concerns.

The #CheckYourTap campaign provides free water tests to investigate water quality issues in homes.

The National Clean Water Collective stopped by the home of Flint resident Amanda Wheat to test her water on Friday, April 26. It’s part of the organization’s free water testing initiative that kicked off Thursday, April 25 to address lingering water quality concerns in the Vehicle City.

These tests scan for 109 different contaminants. Wheat, who has worries about her water, was glad to get the test.

“I think that it’s wonderful. I think that a lot of people should be aware of it. There should be a lot of social media things going on, and getting people in the community involved and understanding how serious it is. And the fact that there’s still has not been any relief, and there’s several people affected that could use the money that they are owed in order to do better and feel better,” Wheat said.

Virginia Nolen, an ambassador for the National Clean Water Collective shared her thoughts on the matter.

“More work needs to be done. There’s a lot of issues still going on, the same issues, and so we have to step it up in what we’re doing to help the residents to get results,” Nolen said.

The National Clean Water Collective is planning fundraising initiatives to implement water filtration systems that provide Flint residents with cleaner and safer water.

The organization said it has already brought cleaner water to five community centers and churches across Flint, including the Haskell Community Center and Hasselbring Senior Center.
