SAGINAW, Mich. (WNEM) - Good morning, Mid-Michigan! We hope you’re having a nice start to your day. Before you head out the door, check out these five things you need to know for today.

1. The future for Grand Blanc Township Fire Chief Jamie Jent could be decided at tonight’s board meeting. The Michigan Association of Firefighter’s Union (MAFF) Local 1137 is showing support for Jent, after he was placed on administrative leave last week. Union president Alex Newton said the news came as a shock, claiming the decision came from the township superintendent, after Jent raised concerns about unsafe staffing levels in the wake of church tragedy on September 28. The Grand Blanc Township Board of Trustees meets tonight at 6 p.m. There will be a gathering in support of Jent outside the township hall starting at 4 p.m.

2. The Flint City Council has not reached a decision on providing more security cameras to the police department. The matter was left unresolved, after Monday night’s meeting was cut short due to arguments among council members. The item on the table—to spend nearly $200,000 dollars to add 31 more license plate-reading cameras across the city. The contract with the Flock Group Inc. would expand Flint’s surveillance network by almost 50%. Police say this could help with crime-fighting, but opponents worry it edges too close to mass surveillance. Funding for the equipment would come from state grants and the police department’s budget. Before the council could even get to that though, a debate broke out over a resolution recognizing October as Domestic Violence Awareness Month in the city. The argument prompted the council to end the meeting early.

3. The Michigan Court of Appeals is ruling on a lawsuit between the State Senate and House. The Democratic-led Senate and Majority Leader sued the Republican-led House and Speaker after nine bills passed late last year were not sent to Governor Gretchen Whitmer for her signature. A Court of Claims judge ruled in favor of the Senate, and the House appealed. The Appeals Court panel agreed with the original ruling, ordering the bills to be sent to the Governor.

4. Birch Run Area Schools is asking for voters to approve a nearly $18 million dollar bond proposal during next week’s election. If the bond passes, projects such as adding classrooms and upgrading the skills trade space will be able to start next year. The district’s current debt levy would remain unchanged, so there would be no additional cost to taxpayers.

5. Delta College is hosting the Great Lakes Bay Job Fair this afternoon. You can meet with local employers from companies like Covenant Healthcare and Michigan Sugar today from 12 to 3 p.m. in the Pioneer Gym. Remember to bring copies of your resume and be prepared for on-site interviews.
