LANSING, Mich. (WILX) - Changes to Michigan’s automatic voter registration process take effect Monday.

Beginning June 1, residents who apply for or renew a driver’s license or state ID will have the option to opt out of automatic voter registration after completing their transaction.

The Michigan Department of State said it will mail letters to eligible residents with instructions on how to decline voter registration or voter registration updates.

Michigan voters approved a constitutional amendment in 2018 requiring the state to automatically register eligible residents to vote when they apply for or renew a driver’s license or state ID, unless they choose not to participate.

In 2023, Gov. Gretchen Whitmer signed legislation creating the new mail-based opt-out process.
